Lessons Learned From 10 Years of Using Cannabis šŸ¤«

Hey!

Weā€™re 2 weeks away from the startĀ ofĀ summer and Iā€™m beyond excited. Iā€™m looking forward to being outdoors, sipping on infused smoothies like this one and getting some much-needed sunshine ā˜€ļø

In this weekā€™s newsletter, Iā€™ll beā€¦
šŸŽ announcing the winner of the PAX Plus giveaway
šŸŒæ sharing my reflection and learnings from 10 years of consuming
šŸ‘„ exploring whether charcoal filters on joints actually work
šŸ« sharing my infused chocolate superfood smoothie
šŸ¦“ discussing medical cannabis impact on osteoarthritis

For the past two months, iā€™ve been dabbling in the world of concentrates using e-rigs to vaporize concentrates. Iā€™ve always been intimidated by the traditional dab rigs, and I prefer non-combustive methods. Iā€™ve been using my Stundenglass with the ModulĀ attachment and not only has it been one of the smoothest experiences, itā€™s so easy to clean and my glass rarely gets dirty (because theres no smoke, just vapour). NGL, these pieces are hella expensive and theyā€™re definitely a long-term investment. But if youā€™re ever thinking of splurging or getting someone a reaaaaal nice gift, use CANNABINISTA for 20% off āš”ļø

šŸ™‹šŸ» Alexander from šŸ“ Cambridge, Ontario Canada asksā€¦

Q: What are your thoughts on active charcoal carbon filters for joints?

A: Activated charcoal carbon filters for joints are designed for reduction of harmful substances when one inhales smoke from a cannabis joint. Burning cannabis creates smoke, which may contain toxic compounds, chemicals and carcinogens. Charcoal filter products claim to protect against mouth, throat and hot smoke inhalation, as activated charcoal has a special surface structure that allows it to absorb quantities of pollutants.

I was not able to find any studies done on cannabis to support the effectiveness of charcoal filters, however I found one for cigarettes. Results found that charcoal filters may protect cigarette smoke-induced cytotoxity, protein modification, apoptosis and emphysema. Some joint smokers also claim that adding a charcoal filter reduces the potency of cannabinoids and terpenes for the user.

So whatā€™s the answer? Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer as there is a lack of research on this topic. My thoughts? Based on my ownexperience, using a filter does make my experience more smooth, and it does ā€œfeel betterā€ - this is anecdoctal feedback though - I have no ā€œhard evidenceā€ to prove this. If youā€™re concerned about lung health, the best way to protect the lungs is to obviously not smoke anything and never breathe in pollution ā€” but we know this is not possible LOL. Thatā€™s why Iā€™ve been moving over to vaporization as my primary method for inhalation.

This weekā€™s video is one of the most raw and authentic conversations Iā€™ve ever posted online. Watch on YouTube or listen on Spotify or Apple podcasts! I share when I started using, why I use now, how I choose what and when to consumeā€¦ we even talk about my personal experience with cannabis for mental, physical and sexual health. Itā€™s one of my favourite videos - and I know youā€™ll love this one too!

šŸ—žļø Can medical cannabis help with osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, in which the tissues in the joint break down over time. Itā€™s the most common type of arthiritis and more common amongst older adults and seniors. People who osteoarthiritis usually have joint pain and stiffness. Many factors can contribute to development of osteoarthritis, such as a history of joint injury, overuse, and unhealthy weight.

This 2024 UK study looked at the effects of medical cannabis in patients with chronic pain caused by osteoarthritis. TBH, the results are murky, there were several study limitations, and no definitive result was provided, but there was a general trend that there was improvement in self-reported pain amongst the patients. Though causality cannot be assumed in this observational study, results support development of randomized control trials for osteoarthritis pain management with medical cannabis.

I highly recommend reading through the entire article to best understand the study design and results. I struggle with dissecting these articles sometimes because there are so many variables to call out and then it ends up being a long-ass email that no one wants to read LOL! Nonetheless, this is still an interesting piece of news that is moving cannabis research in the right direction ā€” and thatā€™s the least we can ask for šŸ˜…
