THIS WEEK IN CANNABIS NEWS 🗞️

  • More outdoor consumption spaces are opening in BC:Businesses in British Columbia are seizing the opportunity to open outdoor cannabis consumption spaces following a recent amendment. The Billy Miner Ale House and Cafe in Maple Ridge, along with Cheeky's Cannabis, are among those leading the trend. Seed and Stone on Vancouver Island and Cannabis Cottage in Penticton are also joining in. These ventures aim to offer comfortable alternatives for cannabis use outside of homes and attract customers back post-pandemic.
  • Two of every five dollars spent on legal cannabis in Canada went to government coffers: Between 2022 and 2023, Canadian governments earned $1.9 billion from legal cannabis sales, representing 40% of total revenue, with a nearly 25% sales increase. Dried flower dominated sales, while extracts saw a 59% growth. Less than 10% of adults use cannabis regularly, mostly among younger age groups. Legal sources were preferred by 71.7% of buyers, citing safety and compliance. Cannabis sales slightly declined for the first time, possibly due to market saturation. Halifax leads in consumption, but Toronto and Vancouver are catching up. Cannabis-related arrests have decreased since legalization, with most offences related to illegal import/export.
  • Gen Z Consumes Less Alcohol, Prefers More Cannabis and Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Las Vegas sees a decline in Gen Z alcohol consumption and a rise in cannabis use, suggesting potential success for consumption lounges. Patrick Trout notes fewer people drinking at shows, opting for non-alcoholic options and cannabis. Christopher LaPorte helped design Nevada's first consumption lounge, Smoke and Mirrors, catering to this trend. Planet 13's Dazed! lounge offers both cannabis and alcohol services. Anobile anticipates changes in music scenes with the rise of consumption lounges.
  • The Cannabis Market Is Booming in Japan:
The cannabis market in Japan has experienced significant growth, expanding sixfold from 2019 to 2023 to reach $173.8 million. This surge is attributed to increased demand for relaxation, sleep improvement, and stress relief products. Legal amendments in 2024 are expected to accelerate the use of CBD in various industries. While the illicit cannabis market remains larger than the legal CBD market, regulatory changes aim to shift this balance. Challenges include consumer education, product safety, and regulatory compliance, but the market shows potential for growth, particularly in health and wellness sectors.
