What do you do if you’re too high? 🫠

Hey!

I’m writing this newsletter as I’m high up in the sky on my way to experience what it means to truly be Cali Sober in Los Angeles, California 🌴 I’m excited to soak up that sunshine while also experiencing what that California Kush has to offer 😏 I’m excited to explore the cannabis lounges, meet up with cannabis professionals on the West Coast, and of course, eat some dope munchies. Be sure to tune into my stories this upcoming week, as I’ll be giving you the inside scoop on all that green 🍃

This past week was a fun one — I’ve been in the process of revamping my brand which includes redoing my brand photos. Check out this behind the scene shot! I can’t wait till the photographer finishes editing the photos — I’m super excited to show y’all!

I also went on the CannDelta podcast to talk to Sherry Boodram, the CEO of CannDelta, about the challenges in cannabis marketing and shared my insights on how to engage with your canna-audience in a digital and highly censored environment. The podcast isn’t up yet — but I’ll share it here when it goes live 😌

🙋🏻‍♀️ Weekly Q&A

Last week I announced that I’ll be incorporating a newsletter-exclusiveQ&A. For your chance to be featured, submit your canna-questions here.

Trina from 📍 Lafayette, Indiana, USA asks…

Q: What’s your favorite solution for when you got a little too high and feel nauseous? I’ve heard black peppercorns helps but I’m curious what you recommend!

A: Thank you Trina for this question! My tip for when you get too high actually starts before you consume. Starting low and going slow is the key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience, and it takes practice with being mindful about your dose. Whenever I am trying a new product or format, I start with a low dose, and wait 30 minutes to 1 hour before increasing my dose. It’s easy to go up, but harder to come down.

But let’s say that you’ve already gone too far, and you’re having an unpleasant experience… this is what I would suggest:

👄 Chew on black peppercorns. Black peppers contain caryophyllene which is associated with reducing symptoms of anxiety, according to Leah Sera, co-director of the medical cannabis science and therapeutics program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Note that this is based on studies done on animals, and most of the feedback on humans has been anecdotal.

🌿 Some people suggest consuming CBD to balance out the effects of THC but there has been inconclusive evidence to support this claim.

💦 Hydrate. This is my own personal tip based on experience. I always have water with electrolytes before, during and after my cannabis experiences. Consumption of cannabis can make us feel dehydrated and thirsty, and I find that staying hydrated helps me avoid nausea and feelings of discomfort.

😮‍💨 Move to a safe space and focus on your breath. If I feel too lifted, I sit on my couch or bed. If i’m in public, i’ll go to a private bathroom or step outside for fresh air — and then I just breathe. 4 breaths in, 4 breaths out, and repeat until you feel more grounded. This helps me bring my mind and body back to the present moment and helps dissipate my anxiety.

🎙️ Cannabinista Is Now on Spotify!

I’m officially a podcaster now 😂 As you know, the censorship on Instagram has been getting abolutely insane and discouraging, and that’s exactly why I’ve been diversifying to more free platforms like YouTube and Spotify — where they at least allow for canna-content to exist. I’ve always loved long form content like podcasts, as it allows for more nuance and in-depth conversation about a topic — which I believe is SO necessary for such a complex topic like cannabis. Listen to my first ever episode.

🗞️ This Week in Cannabis News

This new study got me so excited because it’s such a fascinating trend and it’s a Canadian 🇨🇦 A study commissioned by Health Canada showed an increasing number of adults 55 and over smoked cannabis for medical and non-medical purposes since cannabis was legalized in Canada in October 2018.

Although the study was small, only on 188 people across the country, it’s an exciting trend that can help change the stigma towards cannabis amongst the older generation, who traditionally have been more opposed to cannabis.

Do any older adults in your life consume cannabis? What are their reasons for consuming? And how do they learn about cannabis and know what to try? Send your thoughts to community@thecannabinista.com to keep the conversation going!
