About The Recipe

If we’ve crossed paths yet, just know I'm pretty much obsessed with animals, especially dogs. Seriously, I'll jump at any chance to walk my neighbours' dogs just to soak in some joy. So, here's the deal – making these CBD-infused dog treats is no surprise coming from me.

It all started when I fell head over heels for chihuahuas, especially the long-haired ones. But here's the kicker – seeing them shake got me feeling all sorts of ways. Cue the research, and I find out these treats could be the chill pill they need. Stick around, and I'll break down how to whip up these goodies for our four-legged pals.

CBD & Pups?

CBD oils have gained popularity as a potential wellness supplement for dogs, offering a range of health benefits. Many pet owners have reported positive effects, such as reduced anxiety, improved joint mobility, and relief from pain or inflammation. When considering CBD oils for dogs, it's crucial to opt for products specifically formulated for pets.

Full-spectrum CBD oils, derived from hemp plants, are often recommended as they contain a spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that work synergistically to enhance the therapeutic effects—a phenomenon known as the entourage effect.

Additionally, it's essential to choose oils with minimal THC content, as dogs can be sensitive to this compound. Always consult with a veterinarian before introducing CBD oil to your dog's routine, ensuring it aligns with their specific health needs and overall well-being.

Features

  • Health Benefits for Dogs: CBD-infused treats may contribute to reduced anxiety, improved joint mobility, and relief from pain or inflammation in dogs.
  • Control over Ingredients: Crafting these treats at home ensures you have complete control over the ingredients, allowing you to tailor the recipe to your dog's specific dietary needs and preferences.
  • Quick and Simple: This homemade dog treat recipe is quick, super easy, and simple to make, fitting seamlessly into a busy schedule while providing your furry friend with a wholesome and personalised snack.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is safe for dogs to consume in small amounts or have it applied to their skin or fur. It’s best to use virgin coconut oil that is unrefined, and organic if possible.
  • Peanut Butter: Dogs love peanut butter! This ingredient is the key to making a delicious doggy treat for you furry loved one. Be sure to use natural peanut butter that only has 1 ingredient: peanuts! Do not use any peanut butter that has added sugar or oils.
  • Cinnamon: This ingredient is not necessary but it is safe for dogs to eat and it may help with reducing inflammation and provides antioxidants.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Instead of adding the CBD oil to the mixture of peanut butter and coconut oil, I added the CBD after I distributed the mixture into the individual treat molds. This ensures ultimate accuracy which is very important when it comes to making infused treats for a pet. Generally if I’m making edibles for myself, i’ll mix the oil into a big batch and stir well — but humans are able to tolerate nuances with dosages whereas a pet is much smaller and can be much more sensitive to a few mg over or under.

FAQ

Q: Can I use a different type of oil instead of coconut oil?

A: Yes, you can substitute coconut oil with dog-safe oils like olive oil or fish oil. Both provide healthy fats that are beneficial for your dog’s coat and overall health, while still serving as a good carrier for CBD.

Q: How do I know the correct CBD dosage for my dog?

A: The appropriate CBD dosage depends on your dog’s weight, size, and specific needs. It's important to consult your vet to determine the right dosage and start with a low amount, gradually increasing if needed.

Q: How should I store the treats, and how long do they last?

A: Store the treats in an airtight glass container in the freezer to keep them fresh for up to a month. This helps preserve the potency of the CBD and prevents the treats from melting.

Step 1: Calculate Potency For Your Infusion

Calculate total batch potency by entering product weight (grams), THC/THCA percentage, and CBD/CBDA percentage. Get total THC and CBD in milligrams (mg) for dosing.

(flower, wax, oil, etc)

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, while THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is its non-psychoactive precursor found in raw cannabis

CBD (cannabidiol) is a psychoactive compound in cannabis known for its potential therapeutic benefits, while CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the precursor to CBD found in raw cannabis, which needs to be decarboxylated (heated) to become CBD with active properties.

(ie. butter, olive oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, alcohol)
