About The Recipe

Homemade hot chocolate is one of my favourite beverages to make around the holiday season. Packaged hot chocolate powders are almost always filled with artificial fillers and processed sugars, which I’m not a fan of. This is why whenever I can, I will always make my own hot chocolate! Plus I can make it infused with cannabis as well. There’s not many places that you can walk in and order a weed infused hot chocolate!

Making cannabis infused hot chocolate at home is super easy and only requires a few household ingredients. There are a few different ways to make cannabis infused beverages, but my go-to is to either use cannabis oil or dissolvable cannabis powder for the infusion. In this recipe, I will be explaining how to make cannabis infused hot chocolate with cannabis oil. If you have dissolvable cannabis powder, simply replace the cannabis oil with powder and skip the instructions pertaining to the "infusion” step.

Where Did Hot Chocolate Come From?

Hot chocolate dates very far back (thousands of years) to the ancient Maya and Aztec civilizations who were among the first to cultivate cacao trees. They would drink a frothy, bitter variation of hot chocolate made from ground cacao beans, water and spices like chili peppers - so literally hot chocolate. When Spanish explorers encountered the Aztecs in the early 16th century, they brought back cacao beans to Europe.

Once in Europe, the drink was adapted to European tastes by adding sugar, vanilla and milk which made it sweeter and creamier compared to the original recipe. Over time, the drink has continued to develop into different variations including holiday ones like candy cane hot chocolate!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Naturally sweetened — maple syrup is an excellent natural sweetener!

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Maple Syrup: I like to use the maple syrup as a sweetener but traditionally this drink is made with regular sugar. Feel free to make it the traditional way or add any other type of sweetener you might like.
  • Dairy-Free Milk: I’m using dairy-free milk in this recipe because its easier on my gut but traditionally it’s made with regular cows milk and regular whipped cream so I’ll leave that up to you!

FAQ

Q: Can I use powdered mix rather than making it from total scratch?

A: If you want to use a pre-made mix, go ahead by all means! I prefer making it from scratch because I tend to already have all of the ingredients needed in my pantry plus, I avoid all of the fake additives and processed sugars that tend to come in the mixes.

Q: How long will this hot chocolate take to kick in?

A: Cannabis beverages are considered to be cannabis edibles, which means that they have to be ingested and processed by your liver before heading up to your blood brain barrier. The onset of cannabis edibles can range from person to person, and can also be impacted by a variety of factors, such as one’s metabolism. Generally cannabis infused bevies can take anywhere from 30 minutes all the way to 2 hours for the onset, and the experience can last between 4 to 12 hours.

Q: How many portions does this recipe make?

A: This recipe makes one single portion but it’s super easy to make more! Just double or triple the recipe as needed to make infused cozy drinks for you and all of your friends.

Step 1: Calculate Potency For Your Infusion

Calculate total batch potency by entering product weight (grams), THC/THCA percentage, and CBD/CBDA percentage. Get total THC and CBD in milligrams (mg) for dosing.

(flower, wax, oil, etc)

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, while THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is its non-psychoactive precursor found in raw cannabis

CBD (cannabidiol) is a psychoactive compound in cannabis known for its potential therapeutic benefits, while CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the precursor to CBD found in raw cannabis, which needs to be decarboxylated (heated) to become CBD with active properties.

(ie. butter, olive oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, alcohol)
