What is an Espresso Martini?

The Espresso Martini, a captivating and sophisticated cocktail, combines the best of both worlds - the rich, bold flavours of coffee and the timeless appeal of a classic martini. This beloved drink has an interesting history, tracing its roots back to the late 20th century.

Legend has it that the cocktail was created in the late 1980s by bartender Dick Bradsell in London. Supposedly, a famous model requested a drink that would "wake her up and mess her up," and Bradsell's Espresso Martini was born. The cocktail quickly gained popularity for its unique blend of caffeine and alcohol, providing a perfect pick-me-up for late-night socialites.

Fun fact: The Espresso Martini's other moniker, "Vodka Espresso," underscores its dual nature. It's a true testament to how cocktails can blend the familiar with the unexpected, offering a delightful taste of both the coffee shop and the cocktail bar in a single glass.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Cultural and Artistic Expression: Cannabis-infused beverages have become a canvas for culinary artists and mixologists to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship.
  • Exploration of Terpenes: Cannabis contains aromatic compounds called terpenes, which contribute to its distinct flavours and aromas. Incorporating cannabis into an espresso martini mocktail allows enthusiasts to explore the unique terpene profiles of different cannabis strains, adding complexity and depth to the “drinking” experience.
  • Exploration of Pairings: Just as with traditional cocktails, cannabis-infused mocktails offer an opportunity to explore flavour pairings and combinations. Enthusiasts can experiment with different cannabis strains and infusion methods to complement the flavours of the espresso martini base, creating harmonious and balanced taste experiences.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Half-and Half Cream: Oat milk is a creamy, dairy-free alternative that can easily replace half-and-half cream. It has a slightly sweet and neutral flavor that pairs well with the pumpkin, maple syrup, and cannabis oil. Oat milk froths well, making it a good choice for creating a smooth and velvety cold foam. It’s also a great option for those who are lactose intolerant or prefer plant-based ingredients.
  • Maple Syrup: Agave syrup is a natural sweetener with a mild, neutral taste that won't overpower the other flavors in the mocktail. It's slightly thinner than maple syrup, which makes it easier to mix into the foam. Agave syrup also blends well with the vanilla and pumpkin, providing a subtle sweetness that complements the overall flavor profile without being too bold.

  • You can use any kind of non-alcoholic spirit for this recipe but typically, espresso martinis are made with vodka or gin. Finding a non-alcoholic spirit that has similar notes to those two will bring you closest to the true espresso martini flavours but the recipe works with anything you’ve got!

FAQ

Q: What food pairs best with an espresso martini?

A: The espresso martini tends to pair very well with many different Italian dishes. The antipasto misto which includes artichokes, mushrooms, mixed olives and sharp provolone tends to be a great place to start as these varied textures and flavors enhance the bold and complex notes of the espresso martini.

Q: Do I have to include a non-alcoholic spirit or can I just go without it?

A: You don’t necessarily have to include a non-alcoholic spirit but you might find that the mocktail is very sweet without it. The proportions will be slightly off and the non-alc spirit will not do its job of cutting the sweetness and bitter coffee taste. Be mindful that you may need to adjust the dosages as well!

Q: What can you use instead of espresso in an espresso martini?

A: If you don’t have any espresso blend coffee on hand, fear not! You can easily just use instant or ground coffee but brew for a little longer and make it more bold you still get that strong coffee taste in there. Don’t forget to let it totally cool before you make the mocktail.

Step 1: Calculate Potency For Your Infusion

Calculate total batch potency by entering product weight (grams), THC/THCA percentage, and CBD/CBDA percentage. Get total THC and CBD in milligrams (mg) for dosing.

(flower, wax, oil, etc)

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, while THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is its non-psychoactive precursor found in raw cannabis

CBD (cannabidiol) is a psychoactive compound in cannabis known for its potential therapeutic benefits, while CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the precursor to CBD found in raw cannabis, which needs to be decarboxylated (heated) to become CBD with active properties.

(ie. butter, olive oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, alcohol)
