What is a Margarita?

The history of the margarita is a colourful and intriguing tale that spans over several decades. While there are multiple claims to its origin, one popular theory suggests that the margarita emerged in the late 1930s or early 1940s, likely in Tijuana, Mexico. Carlos "Danny" Herrera, a bartender at Rancho La Gloria, is often credited with creating the first margarita.

Legend has it that he concocted the drink for a customer who was allergic to all alcohols except tequila but found it too harsh to drink straight. He mixed tequila with lime and triple sec, creating a refreshing and balanced cocktail that he named after the customer's name, Margarita.

As for the spicy twist in cocktails, the concept of adding heat to drinks can be traced back to ancient civilizations that used spices and peppers to enhance their alcoholic concoctions. In more recent history, the trend of spicing up cocktails, including margaritas, gained momentum in the mid-20th century. The addition of jalapeños, chilli peppers, and other spicy elements brought an exciting dimension to cocktails, adding both a kick and a unique flavour profile.

This innovative approach has since led to the creation of a variety of spicy margarita variations, enticing adventurous palates with a harmonious blend of sweet, sour, and spicy elements. The fusion of heat and refreshment has made spicy margaritas a beloved and ever-evolving category within the cocktail world, offering enthusiasts a thrilling and memorable drinking experience.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • No Alcohol Hangover: Cannabis infused mocktails are the perfect way to have a social drink without the wicked hangover the next day!
  • Perfect Summertime Refreshment: A cannabis-infused margarita is the best way to cool off on a hot summer day. Just add in a patio and your closest friends and you’re set for an amazing time!
  • Alternative to Smoking: For those who prefer not to smoke cannabis, the mocktail offers an alternative method of consumption, allowing you to enjoy the effects through a refreshing, spicy beverage.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Orange Juice: Pineapple juice offers a sweet and tangy flavor, similar to orange juice, but with a tropical twist. It complements the lime juice and jalapeno, adding a more exotic flavor profile. The sweetness of pineapple juice can also balance the heat from the jalapeno, making the mocktail more enjoyable for those who prefer a slightly sweeter drink.
  • Agave Syrup: Honey is a natural sweetener with a rich, floral flavor that can substitute for agave syrup. It adds depth and warmth to the mocktail, complementing the citrus and spicy notes. Honey also has a slightly thicker consistency, which can give the mocktail a smoother mouthfeel. Maple syrup would be another great alternative and if you're looking to elevate your infusion game, try my infused maple syrup recipe!
  • Jalapeno Pepper: Serrano peppers are slightly hotter than jalapenos, so this substitution is perfect if you want to kick up the spice level a bit. Serranos have a bright, crisp flavor that pairs well with the citrus elements in the drink. This can add an extra layer of complexity to the mocktail, making it more intriguing for those who enjoy a spicier drink.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • The fresher your ingredients are, the better the margarita will taste!
  • The spice level is very customizable! If you feel like you want extra heat just add a few extra slices of Jalapeno, OR if you’d prefer something a bit more mild, leave out a few slices.

FAQ

Q: Do I Have to Make My Margarita Spicy?

A: Absolutely not! This recipe is very customizable and if you’d prefer a margarita that’s more mild feel free to only include half the amount of jalapeno or even none of it. On the flip side, if you’re someone who loves a lot of spice, feel free to add more jalapeno to your liking - just don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Q: What if I Don’t Have Dissolvable Plant Powder?

A: Fear not, if you can’t find any dissolvable plant powder at your local cannabis store, it's actually very simple to make! You only need 3 ingredients, tapioca starch/flour, sunflower lecithin, and cannabis oil. Check out my easy recipe here.

Q: Can I Still Include the Tequila in This Margarita?

A: Well, short answer is yes, but please be extra mindful when consuming. Many people find that mixing cannabis and alcohol can heighten the effects of both so if you do decide to add the tequila, I would half the amount of the plant powder and the tequila too. Start low and go slow. You can always add more if you need but you can’t take any away once you’ve consumed!

Step 1: Calculate Potency For Your Infusion

Calculate total batch potency by entering product weight (grams), THC/THCA percentage, and CBD/CBDA percentage. Get total THC and CBD in milligrams (mg) for dosing.

(flower, wax, oil, etc)

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, while THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is its non-psychoactive precursor found in raw cannabis

CBD (cannabidiol) is a psychoactive compound in cannabis known for its potential therapeutic benefits, while CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the precursor to CBD found in raw cannabis, which needs to be decarboxylated (heated) to become CBD with active properties.

(ie. butter, olive oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, alcohol)
