About The Recipe

Cannabis-infused popcorn also known as cannabutter popcorn offers a unique twist to the traditional snack, providing a delightful way to enjoy the effects of cannabis in a casual setting. This treat is perfect for social gatherings, movie nights, or any laid-back occasion where you'd like to add an extra element of relaxation. Before serving cannabis-infused popcorn at an event, it's crucial to consider the individual tolerance levels of your guests and to communicate that the popcorn is infused.

To prepare this delectable snack, one common method involves infusing the popcorn with cannabutter. Cannabutter is butter that has been infused with cannabis, typically through a slow simmering process. It's important to portion the popcorn appropriately to ensure a consistent and controlled dosage for each serving. This way, everyone can enjoy the popcorn responsibly and savour the unique experience it brings to the table.

How did Cannabutter Popcorn Happen?

The history of cannabis-infused popcorn is a relatively recent chapter in the broader narrative of cannabis edibles. As cannabis legalization and acceptance have grown, creative culinary enthusiasts have explored various ways to incorporate the plant into diverse recipes. Popcorn, being a popular and versatile snack, quickly became a canvas for cannabis infusion.

The origins of this trend are often attributed to the evolving landscape of cannabis legality in regions such as parts of the United States and Canada, where the production and consumption of edibles gained prominence. While cannabis-infused popcorn is not as entrenched in culinary traditions as some other edibles, it has gained popularity in countries and regions where cannabis laws permit its sale. Dispensaries and specialized cannabis product retailers in certain areas offer a range of infused snacks, including popcorn, providing consumers with a unique and enjoyable way to experience the effects of cannabis.

  • Dosage Control: Homemade cannabis popcorn provides the advantage of customizable dosages, empowering individuals to manage their cannabis intake precisely, and catering to those who value a controlled and predictable experience.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Garlic Powder & Paprika: Everyone spices their popcorn differently, this is just what I like using on top of salt but feel free to switch it up and add whatever seasonings you want!
  • Parmesan Powder: I love cheesy popcorn but not everybody does so feel free to omit this ingredient or replace it with another type of cheese! Nutritional yeast would be a great vegan option as it has a similar taste to parmesan, plus its vegan and has lots of nutritional value!

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Really give your popcorn a good mix or shake once all the ingredients have been combined. This is to ensure a perfect, even coating on all of the kernels.
  • Add in your favourite chocolate coated candies at the end (M&Ms, Smarties, etc) to create the perfect movie watching snack!

FAQ

Q: Should I replace all of the butter with cannabutter

A: Unless you have very weak cannabutter I wouldn’t recommend it! The cannabis butter I use tends to be quite potent so I really only need a small portion of the overall butter quantity to contain cannabis but everybody makes theirs differently so just proceed with caution if you decide to use more.

Q: How long does this recipe take to kick in?

A: Cannabis butter is considered to be a cannabis edible, which means that it has to be ingested and processed by your liver before heading up to your blood brain barrier. The onset of cannabis edibles can range from person to person, and can also be impacted by a variety of factors, such as one’s metabolism. Generally cannabis edibles can take anywhere from 30 minutes all the way to 2 hours for the onset, and the experience can last between 4 to 12 hours.

Q: How long will this popcorn last?

A: This popcorn should be eaten the same day it’s made. If you have some leftovers I’d recommend just keeping it in a ziploc bag to ensure freshness and eat the rest of it as soon as you can. The popcorn will just continue to get stale and possibly soggy the more days you leave it.

Step 1: Calculate Potency For Your Infusion

Calculate total batch potency by entering product weight (grams), THC/THCA percentage, and CBD/CBDA percentage. Get total THC and CBD in milligrams (mg) for dosing.

(flower, wax, oil, etc)

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, while THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is its non-psychoactive precursor found in raw cannabis

CBD (cannabidiol) is a psychoactive compound in cannabis known for its potential therapeutic benefits, while CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the precursor to CBD found in raw cannabis, which needs to be decarboxylated (heated) to become CBD with active properties.

(ie. butter, olive oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, alcohol)
