What is a Pina Colada?
A Piña Colada is a tropical cocktail that originated in Puerto Rico during the 1950s. It is a sweet and creamy beverage known for its combination of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. The name "Piña Colada" translates to "strained pineapple" in Spanish, reflecting the drink's primary ingredient. It is widely believed that the cocktail was first crafted by bartender Ramón "Monchito" Marrero at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan. In 1978, the Piña Colada was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico.
The Piña Colada has since become an internationally popular cocktail, enjoyed for its tropical flavours and refreshing nature. It's often associated with beach resorts, warm weather, and leisurely vacations.
White rum is typically used in the traditional Piña Colada recipe, although variations with dark or spiced rum are not uncommon. Coconut Cream adds a rich and creamy texture to the cocktail. Coconut cream or coconut milk is used to impart a distinctive coconut flavour. Fresh or canned pineapple juice is a crucial element, providing the drink with its fruity and tropical taste. The preparation of a Piña Colada usually involves blending the ingredients until smooth. The resulting beverage is then poured into a chilled glass, often a hurricane or Collins glass.

Ingredient Substitutions
- Coconut Cream/Milk: Don’t have coconut milk or simply just not a fan of the taste? You can use regular cows milk or another plant based milk but keep in mind that the coconut flavour in the pina colada blend may not be as strong if you do so.
- Coconut Sugar: If you don’t have coconut sugar on hand, feel free to use regular sugar or even brown sugar. I prefer coconut sugar for this recipe because of the added coconut flavour but you do you!
TIPS & TRICKS
- Leave the popsicles in the freezer for as long as you possibly can to ensure maximum hardness. If you like a softer popsicle though, feel free to eat after freezing for a few hours.
